Poison

Ken wanted to scream. It had been at least a day since he'd talked to Diamond and heard about Pellinore losing their dragons. Damn it, how long had it been going on? Was Pellinore the group that had attacked him and Amr that one night he'd accidentally used magic? They'd still had their dragons, so either the breaking was recent or it hadn't yet consumed the whole clan.

But usually once it started, it didn't take long for the whole clan to fall. Those few who didn't lose their hearts usually wound up leaving the clan or, more often, dead. If Pellinore had teamed up with Cambry in hopes of finding a solution and kidnapped Ken…

That sounded like the worst sort of desperation, which meant it had probably been happening for a long time.

And he was stuck in a goddamned cage again. He hadn't been able to save himself and Nev from the pits all those years ago. Hadn't made himself good enough to be accepted by Clan Cross. Hadn't been able to save the pit dragons.

Hadn't been able to avoid getting kidnapped again.

Couldn't do anything right, ever, no matter how fucking hard he tried. Amr was going to be disgusted by him now, and he and Nev would be alone again.

Ken wiped tears from his face. Feeling sorry for himself wouldn't help anyone. He needed to focus on finding a way to save the Pellinore dragons. He could deal with personal matters later.

At least there had been the two that had come with Diamond. He might be some syndicate goon, but the dragons obeyed him, adored him, like they would a steward. Hopefully, Diamond's presence would bolster the dragons enough they'd last that much longer.

Damn it, what the fuck was the point of kidnapping him if they weren't going to do anything with him? Unless they were still working on the plan. Or had figured out Ken wasn't actually the best idea if they were hoping to use him as bait or something. Amr would be noble enough to see he was saved, but he wasn't stupid enough to risk himself—even if he was, the rest of Mordred definitely wasn't.

Maybe they had something other than bait in mind. Bringing down Amr wouldn't be easy. St. George had only managed it because he'd had surprise on his side, and Amr had been too far for his clan to protect him and freshly bonded to a dragon that hadn't even known the paranormal world existed until he was targeted by St. George.

Ken couldn't wait to see the bastards get everything they deserved when they tried to take Cam away from Amr.

He tried not to think about what it would feel like to have someone that determined to keep him. He'd never forget the knight who came to his rescue, dragged him out of the pits, took him home, and adopted him. But Rick had been hired, and Ken knew Rick had been perfectly happy with his solitary life. He'd gone to rescue a dragon and wound up taking in two dumb, mostly savage kids.
